Description of 1987 Sportster replica of the famous mid seventies XLCR:
Rear shocks have been replaced with longer Progressive shocks for quicker
steering and more aggressive riding. Upgrades include sturdier 39 mm forks with
fork brace, 18" mag wheels, Storz rearsets, Ace handlebars, steering dampener,
new Michelin Pilots, new dual HD disk brakes, SuperTrapp 2 into 1 exhaust. The
bike rides, turns, stops and sounds like a cafe racer should. Shift pattern has
been inverted but comes with parts to switch back to standard. This bike is a
close to perfect as you can get once it has been ridden off the showroom floor.
This bike has been set up to duplicate the totally trick Nick Ienatsch
"Hot-Blooded Harley" featured in the December 1987 issue of Hot Rod magazine.

Replica:
There are less than 5,000 miles on this street legal XR 750 flattrack racer
replica. Based upon a 1992 Sportster, it has been customized with a full Steve
Storz flattrack racing kit: tank, seat, exhaust, fender, fork brace, rear sets,
handle bars and shocks. The engine has been upgraded to a full Screaming Eagle
1200 cc displacement with high compression cylinders, dual plug heads, cams,
carb, ignition and Auto Meter tach. and custom painted in HD racing colors. This
extremely rare set up is in excellent condition and fully street legal and runs
perfectly. $15,000

Modifications made with reliability as a main objective
Engine stripped and bead blasted
Crank, rods & pistons carefully balanced
0.20 over stock pistons installed
Cam from 1969 S installed to reduce high wear factor on later models
Cylinder head received mild port job – exhausts getting the most attention
Gasket surface machined to obtain true 9:1 compression
Cam followers modified to improve oil drain from head & lightened
Rocker arms ground & polished & fitted with “elephant foot” adjusting screws
that give 100% contact with valve stem eliminating wear and need for adjustment
Fitted Atlas valves with shorter stems, flash chromed & satellite tip
Competition valve springs with titanium top spring retainers
Internal oilways were drilled to enable the use of a single oil line from the
timing cover eliminating the cross-over line.
Other oil feed hole now used as pick up for oil pressure guage
Both rocker feed & oil pressure lines ar braided stainless steel Teflon-lined
aircraft hose for durability and safety
Single carb manifold carefully matched to head fitted with 34mm Amal MK2 with
K&N air filter
Custom choke cable to stock handlebar mounted lever.

Stainless aircraft hose for petrol lines.
Transmission converted to right hand shift as proper
Layshaft bearing replaced with heavy duty roller version
Pre-’75 innr and outer gearbox covers installed after being machined & fitted
with 1975 style oil seals instead of o-rings
Clutch: new Italian “Sureflex” friction plates to eliminate usual clutch slip &
do not stick to steel plates when bike is parked for a few weeks
Extra steel plate to reduce lever effort
Shifter holes were welded up in primary cases
Where possible stainless steel fasteners were used along with Allen head screws
on all covers
WM2 x 19 Akront on front, WM3 x 18 Akront on rear laced with stainless steel
spokes & nipples
Lockheed racing caliper and master cylinder connected by braided stainless steel
lines on stock disk with chrome ground off on front
Grimeca master cylinder connected to stock rear caliper via braided stainless
steel line.
A hydraulic brake light switch mounted at the highest point under the seat
simplifies bleeding the brake line.
Footrests moved back 3”
Stock electrical system discarded
Lucas Powerbase High Output Alternator installed with its special rectifier &
twin diodes. Rotor turned down to obtain the correct air gap.
Fitting 1973 batter tray allows a 20 amp/hour Yuasa battery to be squeezed in
providing ampler power for the Prestolite starter to crank over a cold engine
Starter was rebuilt with new field coils & a four brush plate to Harley-Davidson
specs – tricky because Harley starter rotates in opposite direction
Boyer ignition fires HD twin-lead single coil
A small multi-function switch from Honda ATC handles ignition, starter and
lights
Improved electrical system powers a Carillo 60/100 watt quartz halogen head
light
All electrical connections are linked with quality automotive wire, soldered
connectors with heat shrink tubing.
The harness is encased in one inch corrugate plastic tube used to protect
headlamp wiring on Chevy truck, split for access to wiring & closed with black
zip ties. Only 4 wires running under tank and no dreaded bullet connectors in
sight
1972 Fastback seat side panels and tail are installed with proper black rear
mudguard.
John Player mudguard takes care of the front end.
Finished with Dupont Imron enamel in Ferrari Red
Black Bub two-into-one exhaust for light weight with touring baffle
Koni shocks
Forks stock Norton with special alloy damper tubes and multi-rate springs
Engine runs on 20-50 Redline which eliminates cam wear
